Be Ian Murdoch.

You love your wife so much you name the masterpiece of your life after your names. Debra + Ian = Debian.

After 15 years she leaves you taking with her half of your money and a chunk of your heart. Debian - Debra = Ian?

She found a new lover immediately but after 6 years you still can't get over the divorce. You are alone. Worse of all every day at work you hear about 'Debian' and it reminds you of her.

Debian debian debian.

Then "women in open source" start telling you everything is white-men's fault. Why aren't you doing anything for women in tech? Aren't you ashamed of your privilege you fucking cis-scum? And even with all your privilege you are alone.

Debian debian debian debian.

Maybe at the bottom of the next bottle I'll find some solace.

Debian debian debian debian debian debian.

Then the neighbour yells "install gentoo you fucking faggot!", it's blind rage.

Next thing you know a cop is strip-searching you, she's a woman. Her name is Deborah.

Apple : You can still use CMD, you just have to dongle-chain 3+ apps to get it to work. Oh yeah, and that'll be $500. You're welcome.

Google : We've decided arbitrarily to change CMD to DMC, but we'll probably switch it back and forth 2 or 3 times in the coming week. Business dependencies? What are they?

Amazon : CMD will be replaced by a flying mothership powered by cosmic rays. (*Bong sounds)

HP : We've decided to sell off CMD and focus on shit people no longer need or want instead.

IBM : Spending 200 million on our own cutting-edge CMD app was probably not a good idea, but hell, it's just money right? We're IBM, it's fine.

Adobe : In order to use CMD, you simply have to sign up for our $200 a month subscription service to everything else we sell. What a deal!

Facebook : Anything you type into a CMD prompt is FB property and will be tattooed on your soul forever. #Progress. 'Zuck '2042

WSJ : We will no longer call CMD line input "commands", we'll just fill your screen with DOS and let the reader decide what it is.

Trump : I love CMD, it's the best for hacking. Very strong commands! Why is Bash so weak and girly?

Oracle: Now that you're using CMD, we're going to shake you down for licensing fees or sue you.

Congress: CMD is flawed so we should dismantle it without a good alternative in place. With fewer regulations and more tax cuts, the market will create a better CMD.

Samsung: KABOOM

Liberals: Trump loves CMD, so it's probably sexist or racist.

Conservatives: Liberals hate CMD so we love CMD.

Countries where people don't have such free access to the Internet don't have these kinds of incidents.
Time for to enact controls on this dangerous assault medium.
No one really needs access to that much Internet.
What's up with these web nuts and their weird pastimes anyway?
Isn't it worth it if we can save just one life?
Our cities are bathed in blood and these Internet companies are profiting from it.
The First Amendment mentioned freedom of "the press". There are no printing presses used to make the Internet.
We just want to register and track Internet users.
And subject them to background checks before they can go online.
And prevent them from using dangerous tools like "encryption" to hide their usage.
We've got to close the WiFi loophole that lets people access the Internet without a background check.
Who could argue with these common sense measures?
If you don't agree with this, you have blood on your hands.

You're typing on a device that stores trillions of pieces of data and makes billions of computations per second with the ability to grab data on almost anything from around the world in milliseconds, using electricity transmitted from hundreds of kilometers through wires on towers dozens of meters tall connected to megastructures that do things like burn coal as fast as entire trains can pull into the yard, or spin in the wind with blades the size of jumbo jets, or the like, which were delivered to their location by vehicles with computer-timed engines burning a fuel that was pumped up halfway around the world from up to half a dozen kilometers underground and locked into complex strata (through wells drilled by diamond-lined bores that can be remote-control steered as they go), shipped around the world in tankers with volumes the size of large city blocks and the height of apartment complexes, run through complex chemical processes in unimaginable quantities, distributed nationwide and sold to you at a corner store for $1.80 a gallon, which you then pay for with a little piece of microchipped plastic, if not a smartphone, which does all of the aforementioned computer stuff but in a box the size of your hand that tolerates getting beaten up in your pocket all day.

But technology never seems to advance...

I don't want to fight you. I know you've won. I know that you've successfully managed to hook up tracking devices to the population, and trick them into paying for the right to do so. I'm okay with that.

But do you think you could just give us a break? All I want to do is listen to a few songs. I don't want to be hooked up to a network or be within wireless range or talk to a satellite. I just want to walk around and listen to a song or two without being part of your network. Is that okay, Mister Apple Man? Please just let me listen to a song or two.

The increasing stupidity of political correctness has reached a new level.

OKCupid, a site that relies HEAVILY on JavaScript for its entire operation, has called for the boycott of Mozilla for their decision to appoint Brendan Eich (the creator of JS, a language used in almost every modern website on the Internet) because he made a donation 6 years before being appointed as the CEO. I don't understand how it is justifiable to call for the boycott of a company simply because someone decided to donate to a charity with their own money.

I understand that you may not agree with your views, and he may not agree with yours, but pressuring a company to fire someone on the basis of private views and NOT qualification is simply childish. How is the creator of one of the most widely-used languages on the Internet not qualified for the position of CEO of a company that deals with the Internet, almost exclusively?

If you agree with this boycott, I ask you immediately uninstall any modern web browser on your computer and seek an alternative that does not use JavaScript. Anything else would be hypocritical, no?

The left preaches tolerance, but they are only tolerant of those who agree with their views.

I was surprised how many people don't know how ethernet cables work, so I've made a little guide.

As follows:

Black is faster but has a higher chance of packet loss.

Blue helps to keep the lines running cool, so downtime is usually way less.

Yellow increases the speed of queries, but if it isn't changed out enough can lead to data clotting.

Grey combines white and black to offer high speeds (not as fast as black) with minimal packet loss (but not as little as white)

White has the lowest chance of packet loss.

Green uses the least amount of power and is best for the environment.

Pink is dangerous, and can lead to outages due to it's inability to filter requests, but it tends to be a little cheaper so it gets used overseas a lot.

Purple offers no upsides or downsides aside from being very physically sturdy.

Avoid red at all costs, heats up lines and may cause server fires, and can even create dangerous firewalls.

Orange combines yellow and red, leading to lines which burn up quickly, very dangerous, usually created by terrorists to take networks down.

CRT is a much better technology than LCD.

1) Perfect black levels
2) Flawless off-axis viewing
3) Much faster refresh rate than LCD
4) Warmer, more natural image (thanks to scan lines and small granules)
5) Far longer life-span
6) Not subject to manufacture problems such as dead-pixels
7) Good range of compatibility with lower or non-standard resolutions without blurring

Given ultimate space and money the world's best CRT could easily crush the world's best LCD. So tell me /g/, why do you like your inferior screens that companies such as Samsung have brainwashed you to think is better than what already existed? The only cost-savings are on their end.

And the funny thing is you guys keep buying this crappy LCD technology and giving away your free CRTs on Craigslist. A fool and his dollar are soon parted I guess.

And before you start yapping about IPS panels:
Enjoy your slow G2G response to switch pixels already, not to mention that hidden input and scalar lag. Luckily, CRT has no such bullshit.

The only semi-legitimate point I've heard against CRTs regards weight, but you don't bitch about the weight of a prospective couch while furniture shopping, do you? Didn't think so.

More strong points about TFTs: -
1st, they last long (1999 to 2013 in my case, still running) - ymmv
2nd, it's very clear at its natural resolution
3rd, TFTs use less power
4th, TFTs are instant on (2s max) - CRTs take ~8 secs
5th, TFTs are more compact. You can move them closer to the wall, or across the table
TFTs are lighter too - but if CRT is too heavy for you, you're a doosh. full stop. new paragraph.

disadvantages of TFTs: -

  • while it's strong at its natural res, it's weak slightly below - if you have 1280x1024 TFT, NEVER use it @ 1kx768 - either 1280x1k or 800x600 is better
  • slower response, motion blur in games and vids
  • while TFTs are clear @ their natural res, they can be TOO clear - some fonts look smoother on CRTs.
  • all tfts seem to be 16/9 - great for movies but TVs exist for that reason
  • 16/9 is stupid unless you have chinks for eyes (paper is not 16/9, and portrait format anyway)

Hearing the difference now isn't the reason to encode to FLAC. FLAC uses lossless compression, while MP3 is 'lossy'. What this means is that for each year the MP3 sits on your hard drive, it will lose roughly 12kbps, assuming you have SATA - it's about 15kbps on IDE, but only 7kbps on SCSI, due to rotational velocidensity. You don't want to know how much worse it is on CD-ROM or other optical media.

I started collecting MP3s in about 2001, and if I try to play any of the tracks I downloaded back then, even the stuff I grabbed at 320kbps, they just sound like crap. The bass is terrible, the midrange...well don't get me started. Some of those albums have degraded down to 32 or even 16kbps. FLAC rips from the same period still sound great, even if they weren't stored correctly, in a cool, dry place. Seriously, stick to FLAC, you may not be able to hear the difference now, but in a year or two, you'll be glad you did.

>>135 actually, the man knows what he's talking about, albeit, petty or nonsense to most people. when i've gone back to some really old mp3's from way back 'in-the-day' (90's, Napster, 56k modem) most of my mp3 library sounds like crap, mostly due to the technologies available at the time. i notice an unusually large amount of "pops" in a lot of songs and a 128k rip sounds more flat than a new 128k rip (both sound terrible regardless). anybody who knows how data is written to a disc would know that bits do get lost over time.

i'm an arrogant, elitist, analog snob with 2 vintage hifi systems (1 solid state/1 tube based) that can expose every imperfection in an mp3 file. it absolutely cracks me up when people think their crappy OEM soundcard, crappy best buy cables, and crappy desktop speakers are suitable benchmarks for judging sound quality.

it's pathetic how nowadays people have allowed themselves to compromise quality over convenience and cost. i'm only 34 but just as bitter and scornful as someone twice my age. just wait until i get my FLAC vinyl rip blog up and running!

"for each year the MP3 sits on your hard drive, it will lose roughly 12kbps, assuming you have SATA - it's about 15kbps on IDE, but only 7kbps on SCSI"
The loss is not because the file loses quality, but because today's encoders ake better files than those you had in 1999. Use the same old crappy coder, and you get the same old crappy file.
Yeah, and lots of pops are cause some newer drivers don't support MP3 playback the way they did in the pre-RIAA times.

"...due to rotational velocidensity"
Is that a word???

No, if you downloaded MP3s back then, you were unlikely to spend 30 minutes on your then-new 33.6 for a 3-minute song. They offered low-BPS songs because of that. If you had DLed a 320kbps then, it would still be a 320kbps now.

I hate Ubuntu. I immediately lose respect for anyone who runs it, and especially those who advocate it. Here’s why:

Name 20 features, release-for-release or year-for-year that have not come from Redhat. Redhat basically runs the show when it comes to Linux. This includes things like NetworkManager, Gnome, Xorg, GCC, glibc, LVM, KVM, kernel, file systems et al. Redhat has developers making significant contributions to the entire FOSS software stack upstream.

Ubuntu on the other hand pulls most of the heavy weight packaging from Debian with each release. They then perform minor patching and testing. It generally lags behind Fedora by a release or two in parts of the software stack. I never see @ubuntu or @cannocial email addresses in upstream changelogs.

So tell me again, how exactly does Ubuntu innovate? They even struggle to release a new theme with each release, and artwork is about the only original thing in Ubuntu.

Yes, Ubuntu is stable because they are standing on the shoulders of giants. Most of the hard work is hashed out before they ever import software into their repositories. This is fine, and what FOSS is all about, but I prefer to be in with the leaders rather than the followers.

What really irks me and what has really brewed my hatred are Ubuntu users. They seem to think Ubuntu is responsible for all that is good in the FOSS world. I have just proven how false this is. In my experience, Ubuntu support mechanisms (IRC, mailing lists, forums) are much less helpful than the alternative.

If you want a nice desktop distro, run Fedora or OpenSUSE. If you like control, run Gentoo. If you need stability, run RHEL/CentOS or Debian. But please, don’t feed the idiot magnet that is Ubuntu!
